SHILLONG: Health and Family Welfare Minister, AL Hek who is looking after the department for the second time, is keen to complete the pending projects of Shillong and Tura Medial Colleges and Hospitasl  in the state

Speaking to media persons after assuming office on Thursday , Hek said that apart from the two medical colleges, he would also prioritize the completion of   cancer wing at the Shillong Civil Hospital which has been delayed for long.

It may be reminded that Hek who is now a BJP-legislator also held the health portfolio in the previous regime of Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government before he was dropped in 2016.

The previous MUA Government had planned two medical colleges in the state, one at Tura and another in Shillong.

The Tura Medical College will be a government-run institution while, the Shillong Medical College will be built on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

The foundation stones for both the projects were laid by the former Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma last year.

The structure of the cancer wing in Shillong Civil Hospital has been completed but it need various machinery and equipment before it is operationalised.

The construction of the cancer wing started in the year 2011  with a funding of Rs 26 crore  from the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.
