SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress on Thursday has demanded that the Centre exclude sanitary napkins from the Goods and Services Tax bracket.
The Congress wing celebrated Women’s Day at the party office in the city and distributed free sanitary napkins in several villages.
Mahila Congress president Joplin Scott Shylla said the Centre should immediately withdraw GST from sanitary napkins.
There were similar demands from various women’s organisations and activists in other states. Last year, the Delhi High Court had questioned the Centre why sanitary napkins, an essential item, should not be exempted from GST.
In January this year, the Supreme Court said it would examine if all the matters related to the case should be heard by the apex court.
