GUWAHATI: The World Poetry Day was celebrated on Wednesday by the Department of English, University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) at its campus in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. Dr Ananya S Guha, Director IGNOU, Shillong and Dr Nabanita Kanungo, a well-known poet, were the invited guests in a Workshop organised on the occasion. The discussion in the Workshop was followed by interesting interactive session with the students of literature.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ananya S Guha said, “Poetry is an act of peace”. Both the poets talked about their years of experience with poetry and how their lives were greatly influenced by the political, historical and geographical aspects of Shillong, to which the writers are soulfully linked. After a thought-provoking interactive session with the participants, Dr Ananya S Guha and Dr Nabanita Kanungo recited their own poems.

Students belonging to different departments participated in a competition on Self-Composed Poetry organised at the end of the Workshop. The competition helped the students to project their talents. All the poems were unique and distinct from one another and the best three were awarded with prizes. Tabasum Taskin of MA 2nd Semester English begged the first position, Violina Bayan and Mahasweta Chakraborty of MA 4th Semester English begged the second and third position respectively. The Workshop ended with address by Dr Garima Kalita, a senior lecturer of the English Department.
