TURA: Former MLA from South Tura, John Leslee K Sangma has urged the Minister of Disaster Management and Relief in Shillong to give financial aid to the victims of the recent cylinder blast at Beldarpara in Tura who are being treated at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati. It may be mentioned that five people- Suvodeep Ghosh, Benoi Adhikari, Nitish Neogi, Mohit Hajong and Prasan Lohar suffered serious burns in the cylinder blast and have since been treated at the hospital in Guwahati. The former MLA commended the district administration for prompt action taken in the matter but said that the financial assistance of Rs 12,700 provided to each of the seriously injured is not enough as even a single injection for the most serious patient costs Rs 13,800. According to Sangma, the cost of treatment of the most serious victim comes around to Rs 25,000 per day for medicines alone, and the parents of the victim are unable to contribute a single paisa as they are poor. “The most serious victim, Suvodeep Ghosh (33) is unemployed whose mother is working as a Peon in Apex Bank. Nitish Neogi (18) is a college student and his father is working as a Cook and Binay Adhikari (25) is a law student whose father is working as an Ayurvedic medicine representative. None of them are in a position to bear the expenses needed to treat themselves,” Sangma said. Sangma said that the owner of the building who himself is a patient with kidney problems is single handedly bearing the cost of all their treatments which he claims, has gone up to almost 12 lakhs now. “The building owner is fast running out of money and will not be able to help them anymore and the family of the victims will have no option but to take out the patients which will be a death sentence to them,” Sangma added and urged the concerned Minister to intervene in the matter. |
