SHILLONG The State police on Wednesday night arrested a taxi driver identified as Haphang Nengnong, a resident of Smit village, on charges of criminal intimidation and causing public nuisance.

An altercation between a local cabbie (ML-05J-0596) and a trucker resulted disruption of smooth movement of traffic.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Jopthiaw Lyngdoh, who was on his way to Shillong, also got stuck for some time in the jam.

“I tried to intervene to resolve the matter but the young man (taxi driver) was belligerent and insisted on having his own way,” Lyngdoh said adding, “In fact he told me that he did not know any DC or SP as only local laws prevailed in the area.”

Later, police arrested the youth.

“He has been booked under Section 506 and 186 of the IPC and is presently lodged in Madanrting Police Station,” said Vivek Syiem, Additional SP (Crime). Nengnong will be produced in court on Friday.
