SHILLONG: Four companies of the central paramilitary forces will be deployed for the smooth conduct of the by-poll in Williamnagar.
A preliminary meeting with the police officials was held on Thursday chaired by Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Kharkongor to assess the preparations for the by-poll.
Though the preparations were complete along with other 59 constituencies for the February 27 polls, election could not be held in Williamnagar following the killing of NCP candidate Jonathone Sangma on February 18 by suspected GNLA militants. Kharkongor said out of the 58 polling stations, the threat perception has been reduced considerably compared to February.
However, adequate security arrangements will be made for the by-poll, the official added.
Earlier, the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, who is the returning officer for Williamnagar, had a meeting with political parties to ensure free and fair election.
