Linza Fenny Syiem made history when she became the first karateka from the state to win a Gold in the 34th National Games held at Ranchi in February. Linza won the Gold in women’s individual sparing below 55kg category. Apart from Linza, who also won a silver in the open individual category, Damang Syngkon won two Silvers and Wandashisha Wajiri claimed a bronze medal in the event. Meghalaya ended up with five medals at Ranchi, all of them won by the State karate contingent.

Later in August, six karatekas from the state, Damang Syngkon, Donboklang Lyngdoh, Sandeep Chanda, Anidahun Mary Warjri and Wandashisha Warjri, were selected to represent India at the Funakoshi Gichin Cup 12th World Karate-Do Championship held at Pattaya, Thailand. The six karatekas belonging to the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA), Shillong were selected by the Japan Karate-Do Association of India recently.
