In a sad moment for sports in the state, All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) technical director I Stephan Leong passed away on October 23rd after prolonged illness. Leong (52) was the guiding force in scouting many budding young talents in the field of karate. Leong groomed state’s prominent karatekas like Linza Fenny Syiem and Damang Syngkon who made it big at the national international stage. Leong was also closely associated with various State Sports Associations like Meghalaya State Olympic Association and Meghalaya Weightlifting Association. With his demise, the state lost a person who made tremendous contribution towards the development of sports especially making karate popular here.

Master Leong, who had contributed to karate for 30 years, is seen as the guiding force behind Meghalaya’s successes in the physical sport.

Besides his role in Meghalaya, late Leong has also been associated with state karate associations in other Northeastern states like Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.
