SHILLONG: Ri-Bhoi College will be upgraded to a Community College very soon, as informed by the Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui at the Assembly session on Tuesday in response to a query raised by Congress MLA, Mayralborn Syiem.
In a circulated reply to a question raised by Syiem, the Education Minister said the government has no intention to upgrade the Ri-Bhoi College to a Government college.
As for the facilities of community college, the Education Minister said the community college would get a one-time grant of Rs 2 crore for infrastructure development.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA George Lyngdoh expressed concerns on the congestion of colleges as largescale migration of students from rural to urban areas has created problems and hoped that creation of community colleges would ease the problem to some extent.
Rymbui informed there were total of five community colleges in the rural areas of the state.
Replying to a query raised by Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh, Rymbui said for the recruitment of teachers, the community colleges will strictly adhere to the UGC norms.
Asked by another Congress MLA HM Shangpliang on the source of funding, Rymbui informed that the government would fund the colleges.
