Two more arrested from Guwahati in coal smuggling case

SHILLONG: More cases of coal smuggling were detected by police with the arrest of two more persons from Beltola.
A complaint was lodged that around 6 am on April 9 that a coal-laden truck with Meghalaya registration that was kept at 13th Mile Old Weighbridge after it was seized in connection with a case at Nongpoh police station was found missing from the place. Later, the truck was located at 15th Mile and its driver Lakhon Rymbai and helper Livingstone Lyngdoh were held.
During interrogation, the police came to know that the coal was sold to one Ramesh Singh at Beltola in Guwahati.
Police seized the coal and brought the same to Byrnihat in the same truck.
Last Thursday, a key member of the coal mafia was arrested from Nine Mile of Guwahati. Ram Bilash Singh, who is from Uttar Pradesh, was arrested during a joint operation by Khetri and Jorabat police. Singh led the police to the dumping ground at 12th Mile and 20 tonnes of coal sourced from Jowai was seized.
Earlier, the Khetri police had arrested four persons on April 3 on charges of illegal coal trading. They have been identified as Iso Suwer, Banjied Lapasam, Hahunbait Shylla and Andrew Kro.
