GUWAHATI: Findings of a study conducted by NEDFi on the performance of students in mathematics and science in the Northeast are bound to raise eyebrows in the academic circles.

As per the report, the factors that may contribute to the low performance of the students include differences in the educational level of the parents, dissimilarities in the teaching-learning methodologies used, among others.

The study was conducted with the support of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati.

The regional plan meeting for development of science and mathematics education in schools of the Northeast, here on Thursday took up a regional plan for improving science education in schools in the Northeast, according to which development can be achieved by offering quality education, especially in the science and technology sector.

The meeting was chaired by C.K. Das, member of North Eastern Council, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. Senior functionaries from the department of school education from various states of the region and NEC discussed the status of science and mathematics education in schools to find out a perspective plan for improvement.

The total requirement of funding for implementation of the components of the proposed regional plan is estimated at Rs 3,864 lakh which would cover 600 schools in the region, with 145 schools in Assam and 65 schools in each of the other states.

In order to achieve the implementation of various strategies, the report proposed different activities needed to be taken up for each strategy.
