SHILLONG: The central executive committee of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) appealed to the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma to reconsider raising the upper age limit for government job applicants and to review the matter.

In a petition to the chief minister, the GSU argued the government should reconsider the maximum upper age limit for general, OBC, and Schedule Tribe for applying into various government jobs to tackle the growing rate of unemployment.

The union stated the uniform upper age limit of 32 years for applying into government jobs is unjustified and wrong, suggesting there should be different upper age limit for different jobs.

The union asserted that upper age limit should be reconsidered at least at par with Union Public Service Commission of India, i.e. upper age limit of 37 years for entry into government jobs with 5 years relaxation for ST candidates and 10 years for differently-abled candidates.

They pointed out that the upper age limit for ST is 46 years, Arunachal Pradesh 35 years (with different upper age limit for various government jobs), Mizoram is 40 years, Nagaland is 35 years, Tripura is 45, Punjab is 42 years, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand is 45.
