SHILLONG: The Transport department of Assam government has been illegally collecting money from coal-laden trucks going from Meghalaya at Jorabat.

According to sources, the personnel from Enforcement Wing led by an inspector have stationed themselves opposite the Monford School (near NRL Pump) at Jorabat.

Interestingly, the area from where it is operating falls under Meghalaya.

The gate has been operating for the last two weeks, some affected truckers told newsmen on Monday.

Earlier, the enforcement officials were operating from the road which leads to Beltola, Assam, they said adding they charge between Rs 1,000 to Rs 1500 from each truck.

Admitting it, Ri-Bhoi district Superintendent of Police Claudia A Lyngwa said police had earlier asked the Transport department officials to stop operating from Meghalaya.

“We are not going to allow them to operate from our State. I would direct my men to ask the Assam Transport department personnel to immediately abandon their operation,” Lyngwa said.
