SHILLONG: Opposition Congress in the state on Saturday staged protest in Shillong to oppose the idea mooted by the chief minister Conrad Sangma of issuing work permit to Bangladeshi nationals.

During the protest on Saturday senior Congress leaders, party MLAs and party workers along with placards and banners demonstrated against the idea here at the Congress Bhawan here.
Speaking to media persons, CLP spokesperson, Zenith Sangma said, “How can the Government even think of this idea which is so dangerous.”
Making it clear that the idea of issuing permits to Bangladeshi nationals is not acceptable the party, Sangma said that the idea had been mooted though the state is suffering from illegal immigration and influx from many years
According to Sangma, today when youths in the state are running from pillar to post for employment where is the necessity to bring people from foreign countries to work here.
“Whether the Chief Minister is working on this idea due to lack of knowledge or he has some malafide intentions?” Zenith Sangma questioned.
Stating that youths from the state and the region are not safe in many other parts of the country, Zenith Sangma added that the State Government should instead create avenues in the state to ensure that youths engage themselves here in the state itself.
He recalled that the previous Government in the state had taken steps like implementing Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Acts and constructing entry and exit gates and the incumbent government should further carry those initiatives forward for the betterment of the people.
Calling the idea of issuing work permits to Bangladeshi nationals as dangerous for the youths of the state, he added that step of the Government might even lead to inter-caste marriage and other social problems after Bangladeshi nationals would be allowed to work here in the state.
Similar protest programmes were also held in Mendipathar and Districts of West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills
