SHILLONG: The district administration of West Khasi Hills is currently preparing a concept paper on the road which was constructed with shredded plastic. West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Arunkumar Kembhavi said the concept paper is being prepared since the chief minister has asked for it.
The initiative of constructing roads from plastic waste in West Khasi Hills has received accolades from different quarters as right now the use of plastic and its harmful effects are the biggest concern in the state.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had also lauded the novel initiative saying the state government was weighing similar initiatives using the garbage disposal management system in every locality.
A 1km road was constructed at Nongkynjeng village in West Khasi Hills by using 470 kg of the polymer. According to Kembhavi, two more roads – Nonglwai I and Nonglwai II – are also being built with the same technology. The projects are likely to be completed by the end of this month and depending on the interest of the government, the initiative can be further expanded.
Plastic waste has turned into a major hazard in the hill city with the government struggling to manage solid waste.
