SHILLONG: The Home Minister, James Sangma who was replying on behalf of Commerce and Industries Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar said in the state Assembly on Thursday that exporters were not showing interest of using the Balat LCS which made it non-functional.

Replying to a query by Congress MLA, HM Shangpliang on the land custom station, Sangma said, “The amount of trade taking place in the particular LCS (Balat LCS) was not there, therefore the exporters are not showing interest of using the LCS, therefore, it was made non-functional.”

Reacting to the reply of Sangma that there was no Land Customs Station (LCS) proposed to be set up in Dangar while the Balat LCS was non-functional, Shangpliang said there are commercial activities all along the border belt and the setting up LCS will be big boon to promote trade and commerce to the villages in the border.

Referring to the 10th Bilateral Meeting of Joint Working Group between India-Bangladesh on Trade and Transit on June 8-9, 2016 New Delhi, Sangma informed Bangladesh was keen on considering to operationalised Dolura LCS located in Sumanganj, while the Indian side was requested to consider operationalising corresponding Balat LCS.

He added both the Bangladesh and Indian side agreed to examine the trade potential.

With Sangma informing the geographical location of Balat LCS in Dangar village, Shangpliang requested for changing the name as the LCS is in Dangar to which the Minister said naming the LCS by Government of India but he will take up the matter with Government of India.
