SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma said a total number of 125 Meghalaya Civil Services (MCS) officers were working in the state even as he informed that the government was aware of the vacancies in state civil services.

To a supplementary query raised by People’s Democratic Front (PDF) MLA, Jason Mawlong during the question hour in the state Assembly, Sangma said, “Government requested MPSC to advertise for 38 vacancies. The preliminary examination will be held shortly.”

Earlier, replying to Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) MLA, Adelbert Nongrum, the CM said, it had never been possible to ensure that officers were not posted in their own districts and continue to remain in their same place of posting for more than three years.

He said, “In Meghalaya the State Civil Service officers are very small in number and majority of the officers hail from the Districts of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills.”

Further, Sangma pointed to various office memo which points out the period of posting in a particular place in governmental departments should be three years and not more than 4 years only in exceptional cases.

He maintained it is inappropriate for him to comment in reply to a query by Nongrum on some officers who got transferred due to favoritism.
