SHILLONG: A social activist from Umkiang village, East Jaintia Hills, Kynjaimon Amse threatened to hit the streets of Shillong of over the apathy of the state government in not repairing the Sonapur-Bokhat road which connects five villages in East Jaintia Hills (EJH) district.

In a statement issued here, he said the people of Huroi village on Thursday made an effort to repair the road in order to reach the highway.

“The People also spent their own money to hire earthmover to clean the mud filled road, so as to enable them to get their basic needs for survival,” he said.

The Sonapur-Bokhat Road is also known as the Rymbai-Borkhat-Jalalpur road which connect the border villages namely Borkhat, Hingaria, Huroi, Lailong and Lejri in the East Jaintia Hills District.

Amse said many letters were sent to the government of Meghalaya for black topping the road while the proposal worth Rs 95 crore for black-topping of the road was made way back in the year 2011.

He criticised the state government over its negligence, the project could not be started even till date as the government failed to get the necessary clearance till date.

“The people are now trapped between the fence in the Indo-Bangla border and the bad condition of the road on the other side,” Amse said.
