SHILLONG: FKJGP Mawprem Circle led by its president Reginald Thabah conducted checking of 5 to 6 ration shops on Friday evening after receiving complaints from the public.
Four shops closed their shutter when the organisation was conducting the check.
In a statement, the pressure group said the organisation inspected two shops-Albas Fair Price Shop and Ronak Thapa Fair Price Shop while they were giving rice to the public without measuring with the weighing machine.
The FKJGP weighed a sack of rice a person received at another shop where they found that the sack weighed 27 kg, 3 kg less than he was supposed to get.
While another woman’s ration of 15 kg was weighed, it was found that it was only 13 1/2 kg. When asked the shopkeepers whether they were cheating the public by not using weighing machine as per government standard, they replied that they were following instructions of the officer and staff of FCI and Food & Civil Supply department.
When they were asked to give the names, they mentioned ‘Kong Judy from Room 101’ among others.
The FKJGP delegation is planning to meet the Deputy Commissioner on Monday to request him to take action against the officials and the shop owners responsible for ‘stealing rice meant for the poor’.
They urged the public to approach the DC or file an FIR with the police to discourage the shop keepers from repeating the crime.
The FKJGP wanted all fair price shops to shut down until the organisation meets the DC to seek clarification on the matter.
