SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister and in charge Mining and Geology Bindo M Lanong has asserted that there is no threat of any disaster at Sohkymphor village from the cracks which appeared in the village recently.

Talking to The Shillong Times here on Wednesday, Lanong said, “There is no threat as far as the cracks which have appeared in the village are concerned.”

Panic had gripped the entire village after mysterious cracks appeared on the ground which was attributed to the large scale unscientific mining in the area. PWD road that connects Sohkymphor-Shangpung via Byrwai village was also damaged due to the cracks that suddenly appeared in the middle of the road.

Last month, the Deputy Chief Minister along with officials had conducted inspection of the market and the village and later held meeting with residents of Sohkymphor village.

Reacting to a query about reports of tilting of some buildings in the village, the minister clarified that only a pillar of a small shop had crumbled because of faulty construction.

Lanong stated that the cracks had appeared due to water logging and the soft soil in the area, and added that mining has been banned in the area as a precautionary measure.

“The cracks have been filled up and vehicles are plying on the roads,” he said.
