TURA: Reacting strongly to report about members of a Garo NGO extorting money from coal trucks next to Rongjeng police station, East Garo Hills police have strongly refuted the allegations and instead mentioned that its relentless drive against illegal collection has led to a drastic fall in the number of extortion cases.

A recent report had mentioned that members of a local NGO called A’chik Development Association were arrested for collecting illegal tax from coal trucks plying though East Garo Hills next to the police station at Rongjeng.

East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police (SP), JFK Marak, has questioned the veracity of the claims and mentioned that his force has been at the forefront of the drive to arrest extortionists.

“We are strictly enforcing a zero tolerance policy against any kind of extortion and it is there for everyone to see. In fact extortion from coal trucks have fallen to zero levels in the district because of our commitment and such unconfirmed reports are demoralizing for the force personnel who are doing exceptionally well to curb the menace,” said Marak.

The police chief also went on to mention that it was his personnel from the district who had successfully arrested and deported to West Khasi Hills the kingpins of the extortion racket including a GNLA overground worker Phizo Marak.
