SHILLONG: Though the BJP-led NDA government is in favour of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, the BJP state leader and Cabinet Minister A L Hek said the government would not allow change in the demography of the state and hence he opposed the bill.
The cabinet decided to oppose the bill since it is against the interest of the state.
“We have collective responsibility to protect Meghalaya. It is a collective decision to oppose the bill”, Hek told reporters on Friday.
According to Hek, he is concerned about the safety and security of people of Meghalaya.
“If we allow the bill, then we will be opening a floodgate which will change the demography of small state like Meghalaya”, Hek said.
He also said that the decision should not be based on religion.
The amendment in the bill seeks to grant citizenship to migrants of six communities.
