JOWAI: A delegation from the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Jaintia Hills met the DC of West Jaintia Hills and JHADC executive member and urged both the district head and the council chief to implement the comprehensive mechanism immediately to check illegal immigration.
Raising concern over the delay in setting up the district task force, KSU-JH president Ohibait Dkhar said in a statement, “The district task force was supposed to function. However, it was delayed till date for best reasons known to the district administration.” The government had announced in 2016 that it would form the district task force as per Clause 5 (1) of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, but is yet to act, Dkhar said.
The KSU has also requested the DC and the JHADC CEM to properly check all illegal trading as most of the outsiders are operating benami businesses.
“Both the district administration and the JHADC should take stern action against those outside traders who are doing their business in the district violating the Benami Transaction (Prohibition) Act, 1988, and the Jaintia Hills Autonamous District (Trading by Non-Tribal) Regulation Act, 2011,” Dkhar said.
KSU stated that non-tribal traders in West Jaintia Hills who have no trading licence should be raided. It informed that both the DC and the CEM have assured them action against the traders.
