SHILLONG: The city traffic police stated that fines and penalties collected during the month of April from violators committing offences under provisions of the MV Act have amounted to Rs 13,31,730 as compared to Rs 6,65,450 during the previous month.
Superintendent of Police (Traffic) BJ Laloo said 509 were fined for wrong parking, 172 for ‘no entry’ violation, 559 for driving without seatbelts and 42 were compounded for driving under the influence of alcohol. Non-FIRs were taken up for four offenders for the same.
Besides, 279 were fined for driving without licences, 19 for permit violation and 49 for riding without helmets in addition to other offences under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Regular checkings are being conducted by the police to ensure adherence to traffic rules.
One-way road
Laloo said vehicles were allowed to enter the new road from Little Blossom School near Polo Towers towards City Hut Dhaba Junction – Police Bazaar.
Vehicles were not allowed to turn right towards Police Bazaar from Pegasus Crown Hotel as it will now become a one way zone but were allowed to turn right near the Old High Court. This was a trial to see the effect on traffic flow.
“The observation is that it resulted in more vehicular traffic jam around the mentioned places.
Therefore, as a result of which it is decided to make the road a one-way zone,” he said.
