NONGSTOIN: A seven-year-long conflict between the villagers of Lawrynjam and the clan of Pariong in West Khasi Hills over creation of a new village ended on Monday, thanks to the initiative taken by the KSU’s Lai Hima unit.

The tussle between two groups started in 2004 when a new village — Lawrynjam — was created bifurcating Rngikseh village without the knowledge of the Pariong clan. The Pariong clan immediately protested the move since land in the area belonged to the Pariong clan and without the NoC from the Basan of the clan no one was authorised to create a new village.

The KSU unit on Monday brought to an end to this conflict by facilitating a meeting between Basan of Pariong clan Wollingtob Pariong and Sordear Shnong of Lawrynjam Dwinlyroy Pariong. People from Lawrynjam village and members of students’ body were also present.

Speaking at the meeting Basan of Pariong clan appreciated the efforts of the students’ body saying “this day — the 13th July — is a red letter day for both the groups, who realized their past mistakes and reached a compromise.”

Sordar of Lawrynjam in his speech also hailed the initiative taken by the KSU.

Both the groups decided withdraw the cases filed in the District Council by July 17.
