SHILLONG: With the messages being circulated regarding people falling ill after eating litchi in Williamnagar, the Medical Superintendent at Civil Hospital there has warned of action against those giving such misleading information.
Earlier, a WhatsApp message quoting Dr Basonti R Sangma said many people were admitted in Williamnagar civil hospital for eating litchis, which were also eaten by bats.
The message also quoted Fr. James Sangma who fell sick.
However, the state health officials said there were no such cases in Williamnagar civil hospital.
“The WhatsApp message circulated that people are getting strange sickness by eating litchis is totally false. There is no one called Dr Basonti R Sangma in Williamnagar civil hospital or in Williamnagar,” said the medical superintendent at the hospital.
The health officials urged people not to pay heed to rumours.
“This also falls under cyber crime and action can be taken against those spreading false rumours to scare people,” the officials said.
Health Minister A L Hek said a case will be filed against mischief mongers.
