TURA: Rongara-Siju MLA, Rakkam A Sangma has called on Meghalaya PWD Minister, Prestone Tynsong to look into the early repair of NH-62 in South Garo Hills which has been posing problems for commuters since the last many decades.
In a memorandum submitted to the minister, the MLA pointed out that the Meghalaya government had allotted contracts for periodic repairing of the road to several contractors about one and a half years back, but that little or no work had been done on the road till today.
According to the MLA, a total length of 13 kms was allotted to one, MP Agarwal in November 2017, 30 kms to Ohme Marak in June 2015, 29 kms to JC Infra Corporation Ltd in February 2017 and 26 kms to CCL in May 2017. While work on the 13 kilometre stretch of road allotted to MP Agarwal has been half done, all the rest are even yet to start work on their respective stretches till date.
Due to the bad condition of the road, public transport vehicles like sumos and buses now use the border road to ferry people to and from Baghmara, the district headquarters. However, from time to time these vehicles are denied use of the road and turned back by the BSF which has left passengers stranded and unable to get to their destinations, the MLA said.
Demanding that immediate steps are taken for the repair of the said road, the MLA warned concerned contractors to initiate work within 10-15 days otherwise their names as contractors should be blacklisted by the government.
