SHILLONG: Around 400 bank employees under the umbrella of the United Forum of Banks Unions (UFBU) went on a two-day nationwide strike from Wednesday, demonstrating in front of SBI’s administrative office in the city on Wednesday.
The strike paralysed banking activities across the state.
The Banks are demanding early settlement of their long overdue wage revision and improvement in service conditions. A salary revision is demanded for all workers up to Scale VII up to the level of general managers. The strike is in protest against delay in salary revision and the paltry 2 per cent salary hike offered by the Indian Banks Association, the management body.
The protest by 10 lakh employees, primarily of public sector banks, affected services across the country, including the North East.
Operations, barring few activities like cheque clearance, in private banks in were, however, almost normal in most states. Assocham said the two-day strike may affect transactions worth up to Rs 20,000 crore. It also urged the government to come up with a stimulus plan for restoring the health of PSU banks.
