SHILLONG: Protesters refused to retreat from areas under Motphran even on Sunday night despite security personnel resorting to the use of teargas shells.
A section of the mob moved to Mawlai at night and the forces rushed to the area to contain any untoward incidents.
A van carrying a mental patient was overturned by the crowd near Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw at 11.30 pm on Sunday.
The van with registration number ML01 7668 coming from Khliehriat was accompanied by four police men and they were taking the mental patient to the hospital.
The van was stopped by the public and they slapped the policemen who were later allowed to go to the hospital with the patient. Later, the angry mob overturned the van.
The police personnel burst teargas shells till early morning on Sunday after the crowd thronged the curfew affected areas.
A police official said after the fresh movement of the crowd in parts of the city on Sunday night, police kept vigil and forces were deployed in vulnerable areas.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma clarified on Sunday that the violence in Shillong was not communal clash.
After the relaxation of curfew for seven hours on Sunday, the East Khasi Hills district administration will review the situation on Monday.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P S Dkhar said no decision has been taken to relax the curfew.
“Depending on the law and order situation, we will take a decision on Monday,” Dkhar said.
Status of edu institutions
Dkhar said schools and colleges in areas where curfew has not been imposed will function as usual.
The city, which remained deserted in the last two days, witnessed a flurry of activities on Sunday after the relaxation of the curfew for seven hours.
The government relaxed the curfew for people to attend church services.
Earlier, after the trouble on Thursday night, shops in Police Bazar and adjoining areas remained closed. It was only on Sunday that a semblance of normalcy was visible.
Though there were no major incidents in the city, a case of assault on some residents were reported from Nongjri area in South West Khasi Hills on Saturday.
Earlier, the chief minister had confirmed the incident and said some accused were picked up and the situation would be monitored.
