1000 paramilitary troopers sent to state Minorities panel member to probe Shillong violence

New Delhi: The National Commission for Minorities will depute one of its members – Manjit Singh Rai from Punjab – to Shillong to investigate the clashes in and around Them Iew Mawlong, the panel’s chief Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi said on Monday.
“Our member Manjit Singh Rai will file a report based on which the future course of action will be decided. He will go tomorrow (Tuesday) and return on Wednesday. He will meet all those affected,” Hasan said.
Top officials of the Union Home Ministry were also in touch with state government officials and collecting regular information about the prevailing situation in the Meghalaya capital.
Adequate forces have been sent to Shillong to control the situation as per the request of the state government, a ministry official said.
Earlier, the Centre had approved deployment of six companies of paramilitary forces.
An official said around 10 companies of paramilitary forces have been sent to Meghalaya. A company of paramilitary force comprises of 100 personnel. (PTI)
