SHILLONG/MAWKYRWAT/NONGPOH/NONGSTOIN: The World Environment Day was observed on the premises of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Happy Valley in Shillong on Tuesday. The occasion was inaugurated by Principal DK Deran.
Deran asked students to take small but fruitful steps to curb the use of plastics.
The students presented various activities to raise awareness on preservation of environment.
BSF green drive
The Border Security Force’s plantation drive that started on May 28 concluded on Tuesday. Around 15,000 saplings of various kinds were planted by the troops of Meghalaya Frontier and their families in all locations and border out posts.
Awareness in Khasi-Jaintia Hills
Districts in Khasi-Jaintia Hills also took the pledge to reduce use of plastic. Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah appealed to the public to avoid use of plastic.
The District Water and Sanitation Mission, Ri Bhoi, organised a district-level awareness programme on Swachh Bharat to observe the World Environment Day at MUDA Complex, Nongpoh. Stickers and garbage bags were distributed and a bike rally was also held.
A programme was organised at Lumchyrmit in East Jaintia Hills where Deputy Commissioner FM Dopth said it is a day that reminds citizens of the need to conserve and restore the greenery of nature through measures such as tree plantation.
In West Khasi Hills, a programmed was conducted by Banteilang Multipurpose Project at Mot Domdoi, Nongrangoi Umyiap. AL Syiem, secretary of Hima Nongstoin and chairman of Nongstoin C&RD Block, said creating awareness not to litter is important. “Our students need to understand that there is no shame in doing or keeping our surroundings clean,” he added.
In South West Khasi Hills, Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo said, “People should participate and make concerted efforts to become agents of sustainable development and are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues for a better and prosperous future.”
William Carey University in Nongmensong, in collaboration with Punjab National Bank, celebrated the day with discussions on topics like ‘Plastic Degradation by Bacteria and Fungi’, ‘Ocean Dumping of Plastic’ and ‘If You Can’t Reuse it Refuse it’.
