New Delhi: The Manila-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) will assist Meghalaya in implementing the ‘Rice Mission’ which is set to be implemented in the next 5 years, beginning this year.

IRRI’s assistance will consist of gathering baseline information, including current challenges and potential for rice in the State, and helping prepare the State’s strategy. Other activities will involve exchange of rice germ plasm and rice management and post-harvest knowledge and training of local scientists, according to an IRRI bulletin on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma and State Chief Secretary WMS Pariat had visited the Manila-based Institute last month and discussed collaborations with Dr Robert Zeigler, IRRI Director General, Achim Dobermann and IRRI Deputy Director General for Research, besides other scientists.
