TURA: Continuing the drive against pollution, West Garo Hills (WGH) Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh has prohibited littering of picnic spots by throwing garbage, alcoholic bottles and other disposable plastic products into the river.

According to the DC, picnickers often leave behind garbage and other degradable and non degradable wastes without properly disposing off the waste materials which ultimately find its way into rivers causing pollution.

A direction in this regard has been given to all BDOs to identify picnic spots in their respective jurisdictions and hand it over to Self Help Groups or to Local Development Committees for maintenance by charging minimal fees which would ensure cleanliness of picnic spots. He also suggested putting up sign boards clearly spelling out the DOs & DON’Ts with a warning of imposing penalties for those creating nuisances in such spots.

Meanwhile, in a separate order, the Deputy Commissioner also issued a strict warning against adulteration, inducing of chemicals and other harmful chemicals on food items like poultry, mutton, fruits and grocery items and also on arbitrary increase of prices on essential commodities by the shop keepers.

Stating that such acts on the part of the shop keepers are adversely affecting the economy of the common people, the DC has informed that a lady Executive Magistrate in collaboration with other concerned officials has been detailed for doing routine checking on such defaulters for taking actions as per the law.
