Sonowal preaches Bhupen-Hemanga ideals for harmony, unity amid diversity

GUWAHATI:  At this juncture Assam is staring at a troubled time ahead over the raging protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 and contrasting opinions on civil society leaders in Brahmaputra and Barak valleys   and apprehension id reigning over public mind over forthcoming publication of second draft of the updated NRC.

In this backdrop Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday referred to singing legends like Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Hemanga Biswas who spread the message of harmony in the society and called upon the greater society in Assam to take their messages forward for strengthening age-old harmony in the state.

Sonowal made this observation while launching a vernacular news daily ‘Goti Dainik’ at a function launched at Banga Bhawan in Silchar on Friday. He at the same time expressed his hope that the agenda set by ‘Goti Dainik’ would be successful in strengthening the society based on universal brother hood.

Sonowal said that media played a vital role in creating and enriching a democratic society as well   strengthening the unity amidst diversity in the society. He urged upon the media fraternity to highlight the schemes of the government proactively for the benefit of the people at large. “At the same time, media should not circulate any news which have detrimental effect on the unity and integrity of the society,” Sonowal added.

The Chief Minister further said that the Barak Valley under the previous dispensation of the state was lagging behind on all vital parameters. “However, the present State government has accorded top most priority for the development of three districts of Barak Valley along with other areas belonging to Brahmaputra, hills and plains. Different communities and ethnicities of Assam are working unitedly for strengthening the edifice of a stronger Assam and all the people of the state should contribute to the cause of a strong and harmonious Assam,” he said.
