SHILLONG: Mobile internet service will remain suspended for some more time and curfew will continue in the city at least till the government holds a review meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
MS Rao, additional chief secretary in charge Home (Police), said the government wanted to resume internet service but “some incident took place in Jowai in West Jaintia Hills and the government is keeping a tab on the situation”.
The ban will continue till 1.30 pm on Tuesday before the government takes a call on the matter, Rao added.
Mobile internet and SMS services in Shillong were restricted since July 1 following the clashes. Recently, the government ordered resumption of SMS service after the situation turned normal in the city.
Besides internet service, curfew will also continue till further orders.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar said on Monday the curfew timings will remain the same on Tuesday.
On Saturday, the district magistrate relaxed curfew in areas under Lumdiengjri Police Station — Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Mawlong Hat including Cantonment Beat House areas (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge) — from 7 am to 6 pm. It is promulgated again with effect from 6 pm.
Night curfew will start from 9pm to 5 am in the Shillong agglomeration.
Meanwhile, a delegation of UDP youth wing, Shillong city, urged Dkhar to ensure that prices of essential commodities do not shoot up in view of the prevailing situation in the city.
“I have already warned shopkeepers and retailers not to increase the prices,” the deputy commissioner said.
While the government is going slow on the issue of resuming internet services fearing rumour mongering in social media, many students have been asking the government to resume the services as the absence of internet is hindering their studies.
