AGARTALA: Vice-President of India M Hamid Ansari honoured the Tripura police with Presidents’ Colour on Wednesday afternoon here in a ceremonial function for its distinguishing performance over the decades.

Tripura police is the fourth recipient of the prestigious badge in recognition of its glorious performance in controlling the insurgency in the state, virtually without any allegation of human rights violation, after Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Jammu and Kashmir, police spokesperson Nepal Das said.

“Before sun set, Dr Ansari will decorate the president colour badge to incumbent Director General of Police Sanjoy Sinha in presence of his three predecessors – G M Srivastava, Pranay Sahaya and K Saleem Ali, who were the main architects of the success in last decade,” Mr Das said.

President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil had in April this year approved the Union Home Ministry’s proposal to confer the President’s Colours to Tripura Police, but she could not make it possible to present in person and so nominated the Vice-President to confer the honour, he added.

According to police records, insurgency in Tripura was at its peak in 2000, when a total of 453 civilians and 61 security personnel were killed by outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), who had their operational hideouts in Bangladesh. (UNI)
