GUWAHATI: Over 600 athletes from the country will vie for top honours at the 58th NationalInter-State Senior Athletics Championships at Sarusajai Sports Complex here from June 26 to 29.

The Assam Athletics Association will host the event featuring some of the top national athletes including track runner and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games finalist, Hima Das from Assam.

“All the 29 states and seven Union Territories will take part in the senior national championship held for the first time in Assam. There will be 14 track and eight field events for men and women respectively. Hima Das will be the brand ambassador of the championship,” Lakhya Konwar, chairman of the organising committee of the championship, told The Shillong Times here on Wednesday.

Selection of athletes for the upcoming Asian Games in Jakarta (Indonesia) will be based on performances in the championship.

“Most of the national camp athletes will be flying directly to Guwahati on June 21 from Poland and Finland where they are currently undergoing rigorous training for the championship,” Konwar said.

So far, 24 states and five Union Territories have submitted entries for taking part in the championship. “We are expecting entries from Meghalaya among the other five states in the coming days,” he said.
