SHILLONG: General Secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Amarjeet Kaur maintained that Meghalaya needs development and lots of problem needs to be solved.
Speaking of the recent turmoil in the state, she alleged involvement of vested political interests which has disturbed the peace of the state, but added that people of the state should not be swayed and divided on non-issues.
She said, “I was interested in coming to Meghalaya as its peace was disturbed by some vested interests and that should not be allowed.” “I wanted to be with the people of Meghalaya, with the working people and to give them the message of peace and solidarity.”
She claimed that vested interests in some political parties have been successful in creating chaos out of a non-issue.
Extensive campaign
The AITUC has decided to undertake a 40 day long extensive campaign all over India beginning from August 9 and concluding on September 18.
She informed that the meetings of the AITUC working committee on May 31 and June 1 in Delhi has chalked out the agitation programmes to be taken up in addition to the AITUC centenary celebration in 2020 through nation-wide programmes.
“The idea is to not only go to workers but to touch all industrial areas, enterprises, institutions and beyond that to go to the common people,” she said.
She criticised the Narendra Modi government for trying to take away all labour rights and asserted that India is being pushed back to the pre-Independence era.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya State Committee of the AITUC held a general meeting on Friday on the premises of CPI office in honour of Kaur’s visit to the state.
