SHILLONG: The unrest in the city has delayed the formation of Meghalaya Lokayukta.
An official source said on Friday that though the meeting of the selection committee to decide on Meghalaya Lokayukta was scheduled on June 4, the law and order situation prevented holding of the meeting.
Later, the chief justice of High Court of Meghalaya, who is part of the selection panel, was not available, sources added.
Earlier, a meeting was scheduled on May 9 to discuss the matter but it was deferred.
The committee was to shortlist the names to be appointed as a chairman and other members for the Lokayukta.
The committee had in the past received many names but it depends on the committee to call fresh names, sources added.
The Supreme Court had set the deadline to complete the process of making Lokayukta functional by first week of July.
The state government had decided to effect the appointment of chairperson by June 30.
However, since the government has not started the process due to the law and order problem, the state is expected to seek more time from the Supreme Court when it hears the matter on July 10.
The state government had appointed a chairperson on October 6 last year with the approval of the Meghalaya governor but when the warrant of appointment was made, he refused to accept the post.
