Youth held with fake currency notes

JOWAI: A youth from Assam has been arrested in Jaintia Hills district bordering Bangladesh allegedly for possessing counterfeit Indian currency notes with a face value to Rs 55,000.

Ronen Basumatry, 23, hailing from Assam’s Kokrajhar district, was taken into custody on Wednesday after Village Defence Party (VDP) leaders Ladrymbai B along with members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Khliehriat Circle caught him circulating fake notes among people on the pretext of seeking a change.

The fake currency note was first detected by one Nowel Siangshai, a resident of Ladrymbai, when Basumatari wanted to change of Rs 1000 denomination note.

“He requested me to give change of Rs. 2000 and when I checked both the notes were found to be fake,” said Siangshai who immediately summoned the VDP members. The accused has already been handed over to Ladrymbai Police.

Circulation of fake currency notes in Jaintia hills is increasing. Recently, Jowai Police seized Rs.32000 counterfeit currency from a woman identified as Daphishisha Kharsati.

Earlier, Ladrymbai Police arrested a person who deposited cash with a fake notes at Ladrymbai branch of the State Bank of India few months ago.
