SHILLONG: Taking a serious note of the statement made by State Chief Secretary WMS Pariat that the demand of the ANVC for creation of a Garo Autonomous Council (GAC) was not feasible, the Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) has warned that it would raise its old demand for creation of a separate Garo state in place of the GAC.

ANVC spokesperson Torik Jangning Marak on Thursday said, “The State Government is dishonouring the fact that we gave up our earlier demand for a separate Garo state in favour of the GAC.”

“If the State Government fails to meet our GAC demand then we would be compelled to once again raise our previous demand for a separate state,” Marak added.

According to Marak, the ANVC leaders would meet the State Government to discuss the status of their demands.

It may be noted that the Chief Secretary had earlier stated that there was no urgent need for any special development package for Garo Hills as is being demanded by the ANVC since the government had already put in place several developmental initiatives in Garo Hills from time to time.
