GUWAHATI: The urban development ministry has selected Shillong as the 100th smart city after evaluating the proposal submitted by the city, a PIB statement said on Wednesday.

Prior to this announcement, 99 smart cities had been selected in four rounds of competition under the Smart Cities Mission.

Previously, 20 cities were selected in January 2016, 13 in May 2016, 27 in September 2016, 30 in June 2017 and 9 cities in January 2018.

The 100 Smart Cities Mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 25, 2015. Under the mission, the Centre allocates Rs 500 crore to each of the cities for implementing projects proposed by it. This amount is matched with a grant of the same amount by the respective state.

With the selection of Shillong, the total proposed investment in the finally selected 100 cities under the Smart Cities Mission would be Rs 2,05,018 crore.

The final list of nine cities were announced by the Centre in January this year, but the 10 slot meant for Shillong was kept open as the city could not submit the proposal on time because of the Assembly elections.

The present funding pattern for the smart city project is on a 50:50 basis between the Centre and the states. However, the MDA government had earlier said that it would insist on the 90:10 funding pattern for the Smart City project owing to resource constraint.
