JOWAI: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Khliehriat Circle, has demanded opening of an infiltration check gate at Byndihati to check influx to Khliehriat Sub-division.

According to the students’ body, the infiltration check gate located at Khliehriat has failed to serve its purpose rather it creates inconvenience to commuters by creating frequent traffic jams.

“The opening of the check gate at Byndihati will help police to detect illegal migrants”, the KSU unit president Satly S Ryngkhlem said.

Earlier, the AJYWO and JYF, Eastern Zone had also demanded opening of a check gate. But it was opposed by the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU).

The Infiltration Cell of the Police department was all set to shift the Khliehriat infiltration check gate to Byndihati when the JSU moved the Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner opposing the decision.

It may be mentioned here that the infiltration check gate at Khliehriat is located in the wrong place as it has never been able to detect illegal migrants particularly those who intrude into coal belt area.

Most of illegal migrants divert their routes before reaching Khliehriat and police personnel deputed at the check gate fail to detect them.
