SHILLONG: The state Congress may have been jolted with the sudden resignation of senior leader MM Danggo, who is set to join NPP but there seems to be more trouble in the offing for the Congress in Meghalaya in the near future.
NPP state president WR Kharlukhi believes that the Congress should be ready for yet another big jolt to hit them in one and a half month’s time.
Kharlukhi, however, did not divulge any details.
Speaking to media persons here on Friday, Kharlukhi said that the decision of Danggo to join NPP is an achievement for the party which is growing in strength in the state.
With Danggo resigning from the Congress and as an MLA, Ranikor constituency is now headed for a by-poll.
Reacting to a query, Kharlukhi said that both NPP and its coalition partner UDP would field candidates that will reduce the chance of Congress to win as it will garner a minuscule number of votes.
He also said the party will prepare for the by-poll immediately.
In the last Assembly elections, former Congress leader MM Danggo had secured 10952 votes while UDP candidate Pius Marwein secured 8950 votes.
When asked about the allegations that NPP is poaching Congress legislators, he said Congress is making such statements for mere political gains.
