SHILLONG: The Umsning bye-pass, an integral part of Umiam-Jorabat four-lane will be opened for traffic by July 30.
An official from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) said that the road which will be fully completed by July 15 and it will be followed by a safety audit of the road.
The officials from NHAI maintained that the Umsning bye-pass was delayed from the contractor’s side as state witnessed quite a bit of rain and there were even manpower issues because of the recent law and order situation.
Right now, one lane of the Umsning bye-pass has been opened for traffic.
Reacting to a query if the four-lane will be extended to Shillong, the official said that there was no such plan as of now.
The official said that there is hardly any traffic coming to Shillong side and it all depends on passengers count unit.
“If the traffic increases, necessary action will be taken,” the official said
Many people who ply on the road say that it takes them a long time to exit out of the city as well and entering Shillong city since there is always a huge traffic right from Mawiong and hundreds of vehicles are seen getting stuck in traffic jams.
Meanwhile, the NHAI official said that now there is a new project to construct the Jowai-Ratacherra road into a four -lane project and it will be implemented by National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd.
The total project cost of the 101 kilometer road project including land acquisition is Rs 1464.5 crore and the letter of allotment was issued for preparation of DPR to M/s Global Infra Solutions in JV with Krishna Techno Consultant in March this year.
