GUWAHATI: The National Hydro-electric Power Corporation (NHPC) on Friday appealed to the Centre and the Assam government to help it resume work in the lower Subansiri dam, which has been stopped amidst fear that the construction will cast an impact on downstream residents in Assam.

“The dam work has stopped since December and now I appeal that talks should resume and the dam work should start,” NHPC executive director V Garg told a press conference here. “We appeal to both the Assam and Centre government to help us resume work and prevail on the organisations,” he said.

NHPC is constructing the Lower Subansiri project, the biggest hydroelectric project undertaken in India so far, which is located near North Lakhimpur on the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Anti-dam protesters, led by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), alleged that the hydro-electric projects, being carried out by NHPC, would have a serious impact on the lives of the people living in the downstream of the river. (PTI)
