NHRC team in city for spot probe into May 31 incident

SHILLONG: A three-member National Human Rights Commission delegation is in the city for a spot inquiry into the Sweepers’ Lane incident on May 31 and the developments leading to the law and order breakdown.
The delegation on Tuesday visited Harijan Colony and recorded the statements of residents.
However, the details of the meeting with the residents were not divulged by the officials.
A member told media persons that the visit took place in accordance with the directive of NHRC.
The team will leave Shillong on Friday.
According to the official schedule, the NHRC team will examine the witnesses such as executive magistrates deployed in the city during the clash on May 31, the officer in-charge of the police team deputed to control the situation, the officer in charge of CRPF deputed for dispersal of the mob, the doctors who treated the injured, including police and CRPF personnel, members of the Sikh community, council members or any other independent witness.
The NHRC team sought a detailed incident report from district magistrate, copy of the proposal initiated for relocation of the Sikh people, report of the superintendent of police regarding the safety and security of the Sikh residents, copies of the FIRs registered and copies of the medical reports of the injured persons and polic men.
The delegation will also examine the executive order regarding the curfew, CCTV footage, photographs, video clips or news reports related to the May 31 incident and copies of the daily situation report of the SP.
