SHILLONG: The state government has instructed the deputy commissioners of East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills to start the process of land acquisition for the all-important Shillong-Dawki road project.
Deputy Chief Minister in charge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong informed that the detailed project report (DPR) is ready and the requisite fund has been sanctioned by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
“Everything is more or less in order”, Tynsong said while adding that JICA would provide around Rs 1200-1300 crore for the vital project.
The 95km Shillong- Dawki road will be taken up at a cost of Rs 1377.5 crore inclusive of the construction cost and the land compensation.
The road project, which is scheduled to be completed in two and half years after the tender is issued, will also include a 368 metre long and 12.5 metre wide bridge across the Umngot river at Dawki.
Apart from providing better connectivity to Dawki, the road will be beneficial for trade and commerce with neighbouring Bangladesh.
The DRP includes a four-lane road from Umshyrpi to Mylliem and a two-lane road thereafter connecting Dawki and Tamabil.
Gurugram-based Transys Consulting Pvt. Ltd. is the contractor for the project.
