SHILLONG: The stalemate over the much-awaited Iawmusiang supermarket project in Jowai continues with no concrete plan to bring it back on track.
The project, which is expected to make a difference to the economy of the area, has been gathering dust ever since the DoNER ministry sanctioned it in 2001.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, JHADC chief executive member, Madonbai Rymbai said the council had utilised the first installment of Rs 6.33 crore, released by the ministry for the project, to construct the ground floor and parking lots and allied work.
Rymbai however said the JHADC was awaiting the second installment of the funds since the past several years, which has hindered early completion of the project.
He said that he was trying to explore other schemes from Niti Aayog through its special assistance grants for the district councils to ensure completion of the project which has been delayed by several years now.
Rymbai also said he would soon remind the North Eastern Council (NEC) about the status of the project.
“We need to have the market at the earliest as it would contribute to the economy of the people,” he said.
It may be noted that the DoNER ministry had sanctioned Rs 20.09 crore, including seven per cent agency charge, for the project.
However, after the National Building Construction Company (NBCC) resisted the launch of the project despite signing a MoU, the JHADC handed it over to the state PWD in August 2009.
