Checking of food items begins in Tura

TURA: Acting on complaints from several quarters, the District Administration in West Garo Hills has begun checking essential items including fish being sold at Na’kam Bazar, Super Market and Kabul Bazar as well the regulation of prices of commodities.
EAC Tura, Liza K Marak along with other officials from Supply department, Food Inspector, Legal Metrology and Assistant Commissioner Food safety have been deputed to carry out checks at several places.
The checking was done in view of various complaints received from the people of the area alleging shopkeepers of selling sub-standard and spurious food items and livestock particularly imported fish, etc in the market.
 According to the Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety, Tura Fish and vegetable samples are being sent to Food Analyst to the Government of Assam and Meghalaya, State Public Health Laboratory, Guwahati for checking the presence of preservative like formalin and other chemicals for fishes and food colours, pesticides and other chemicals for vegetables.
